The business emerged from a dairy founded in 1898 and was established by Karl Grünwald as a small haulage operation with a horse-drawn cart. Karl Grünwald bought two trucks and expanded the fleet to 5 trucks by 1939.
Franz Nemetz took over the business from his father-in-law. During the war years, all the trucks were confiscated and destroyed. After the war, operations resumed with a British military vehicle.
In 1958, Hubert Nemetz joined his father's company. He was the first in Vienna to take on the disposal of construction site waste.
Hubert Nemetz took over the business from his father and converted the sole proprietorship into the company Franz Nemetz und Sohn OHG. The “normal” tippers had already disappeared entirely from the fleet. Alongside crane trucks, skip loaders were used in Vienna for the first time.
Nemetz became the first transport company in Vienna to use skips and containers for hauling away construction site waste and commercial waste.
Establishment of the new site in Leopoldsdorf.
1993 Opening of the first sorting line of our sorting facility, in a 1,400 m² hall. In addition to construction site waste, industrial and commercial waste is also sorted for recycling. The share of recyclable fractions is 60 percent.
1996 The Lower Austrian provincial government grants us the permit to accept and store hazardous substances.
1997 The second sorting line goes into operation. It is used specifically for sorting plastic films.
1998 The sorting hall is expanded by 500 m² so that containers and skips can be tipped exclusively under a roof, thereby reducing dust and noise emissions.
1999 Major fire in Leopoldsdorf – complete destruction of the sorting facility. Franz Nemetz & Sohn OHG is converted into the family stock corporation Nemetz Entsorgung und Transport AG. Ms Ulrike Nemetz, commercial director, and Mr Herbert Prammer, technical director, take over the management of the company.
2000 Just eight months after the devastating fire, the newly built and expanded sorting facility in Leopoldsdorf goes into operation on 1 July 2000. The sorting plant is adapted for sorting the household fraction (yellow bag). Purchase of the second site in Himberg.
2002 At the end of the year, our processing plant in Himberg, consisting of four shredders, starts operation. This plant produces refuse-derived fuels for the cement industry and, in view of the 2004 Landfill Ordinance, sorted commercial waste (light fractions) is processed for thermal recovery.
2003 In order to guarantee all our customers a secure offtake of residual waste even after the 2004 Landfill Ordinance comes into force, Nemetz AG concludes a multi-year offtake agreement with, among others, EVN Abfallverwertung, Austria's largest incineration operator. The processing of waste wood into refuse-derived fuel is expanded in Himberg.
2004 A transfer station for residual waste is built in Himberg so that residual waste can from now on be transported to the incineration plant by rail in an environmentally friendly way. To minimise the risk of fire and wind-blown litter, unloading boxes separated by fraction and equipped with a fire alarm system are built in Himberg. Certification as a specialist waste management company in accordance with V.EFB. This certificate confirms that our company properly disposes of and recycles all collected residual materials and recyclables and complies with all legal requirements.
At the Himberg site, the PVC content in the production of the thermal fraction is minimised with the help of an automatic PVC ejection system. In the interests of environmental protection and clean air, we now only purchase wheel loaders and machinery with exhaust afterburning for our company.
In our cooperation with the City of Vienna, we also help ensure cleaner air in Vienna by purchasing seven Euro IV standard trucks. The trucks are equipped with three-chamber spreaders for grit, salt and de-icing agents. Throughout the entire winter season, we keep Vienna's streets free of ice and snow.
2007 The PET ejection system was installed at the Leopoldsdorf site to achieve the greatest possible sorting depth. Storage boxes separated by fraction were built at the Himberg site.
2008-2009 The third shredder line goes into operation in Himberg.
2010 Purchase of a new Lindner secondary shredder including an extraction system and heavy-material trap. From mid-October, the new shredder will replace the ageing Lindner Komet machines.
2011 At the beginning of September, we were certified to ISO 9001 and 14001 for the first time. The entire Himberg site is electrified, saving around 500000 litres of heating oil per year.
2012 Fire in an outdoor storage area in Leopoldsdorf, in which only single-grade plastics burned.
2013 The power generator also disappears at the Leopoldsdorf site, resulting in savings of 100,000 litres of heating oil. Noise pollution has also been reduced to a minimum thanks to this measure.
